English Club with Maryna Lysun, a Fulbright Alumnus on her Experience in the U.S. (a presentation)

Maryna Lysun attended a meeting of the English Club on June 7, 2012 being as a leader. She shared her experience as a Fulbright Scholarship-funded graduate student in the US. She was one of 1,727 Ukrainian students in the US in 2009-2010. Ms Lysun talked about her academic and social life in the US. She introduced the club members to the agricultural Iowa with its vast corn fields and flat landscapes. One of the members pointed out that Uman scientists grow 5 meter corn, but Iowan corn is typically 2.5 meters long. Observations such as these showed that club members and Ms Lysun found similarities in landscapes and agriculture of the Vinnystsya region and Iowa.
Ms Lysun pointed the benefits of her education, her admiration of healthcare system in the States, and her love of Panera bread, one of the biggest bakeries in the US. Ms Lysun told the club about the visit of her academic adviser Dr Meier to L’viv 2 weeks ago. The visit showed the additional benefits of the exchange process inaugurated by the Fulbright Program.
Some members of the club were especially interested in the Fulbright application process and standardized tests (TOEFL, GRE). Ms Lysun answered some of the questions and announced that she would lead workshops on TOEFL on June 16, 23, 30. These workshops are intended to help students study for this difficult exam.
The club meeting went well, and everyone seemed to enjoy each other. Ms Lysun was happy to share her experiences with the club, and its membership was pleased that she took the time and made the effort.

Nevada: Cowboy Culture Hang Out with the Best in the West

Cowboy culture is alive and kicking in Las Vegas during the National Finals Rodeo—the World Series or F.A. Cup final of rodeos and the largest event of its kind in the world. Selling to standing-room-only crowds since the ’70s, the NFR attracts some 140,000 people over 10 days (with more than 13 million tuning in on TV) as the top 15 competitors in each of professional rodeo’s seven events (saddle bronc riding, bull riding, bareback riding, calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing) compete for prize money in excess of $4.5 million (£3 million). Meanwhile, clubs and concert halls fill with the best country-and-western performers, and you’ll see big hats and big belt buckles on people four-deep at the blackjack tables.
