Topic: Gender
Fun Fact of the Day: HAPPY HALLOWEEN! “The biggest pumpkin in the world tipped the scales at a whopping 2,009 pounds (911.27 kilograms) at Topsfield Fair in Topsfield, Massachusetts, on September 28, 2012” (www.babycenter.com).
Topic:
1. What is “gender”? What is the difference between a person’s “gender” and “sex”? Which is a biological division and which is a social construct? How important are gender divisions in our lives?
2. Where do you commonly see gender divisions in society? What “traditional” roles are typically assigned to men, and what more commonly are filled by women? At what age do individuals begin to fill these roles? What professions, emotional characteristics, and hobbies are usually divided by gender?
3. Do you think that there should be a “gender balance”? How important is equality between men and women? Do you think that equality can ever fully exist? If so, what steps need to be taken to accomplish this state?
4. What is sexism? Have you ever been discriminated against because of your sex? If so, what happened? How common is sexism in our society?
5. How can you see evidence of sexism in advertisements and in various types of media? What messages do these ads typically send? Can you give examples of potentially amusing or even offensive examples of these gender divisions?
6. Is there a way to minimize discrepancies between the genders and to promote equality in a safe and practical manner? Is there anything you would do personally to change gender roles? Do you think that gender roles even need to be changed? What do you think will happen in the future?
