The University of South Carolina: New business building combines innovation & sustainability

The Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina offers an exceptional and distinctive learning environment. All business students, including International Students, can expect a strong academic experience with a wide range of program options. There are nine undergraduate majors including the highly ranked International Business major, seven Master’s Programs and PhD programs. The Darla Moore School of Business is accredited by AACSB International and adheres to rigorous international standards.

Scheduled to be open in Jan 2014, just in time for the Spring semester, the Moore School of Business’s new home in the heart of the downtown Columbia, S.C. is a $100 million facility designed to be environmentally sustainable. "This new building is an incredible opportunity for the Moore School," said Dean Hildy Teegen. "Not only will we be designing a facility that will enhance learning, research, and collaboration with other organizations, we will also be raising the bar for innovation and energy efficiency in higher education facilities. Our goal is for others to join us and become sustainable enterprises, as well.”

The new facility will be as high performance as possible; much like the students it will be accommodating, allowing it to manifest the school’s new initiative of Sustainable Enterprise & Development. The goal of the Moore School is to achieve a minimum of a LEED Platinum rating, but it will pursue a rating of Net-Zero. Net-Zero energy buildings generate as much energy as they consume through efficiency technologies and on-site power generation.

Students can expect a learning environment composed of teachers, scholars and practitioners educated at many of the finest universities in the world. International students can also expect to meet outstanding students from the United States and all regions of the world. Students will find wide-ranging opportunities for research, service and campus-wide involvement.

The Moore School’s strong international links brings exchange students to campus from many of the top business schools in the world, while allowing International Business majors to spend a semester at these schools. The presence on campus of students from every continent creates a global environment which enriches the discussions in our courses.

Carolyn Jones, the assistant dean of the Moore School of Business, says, “Having group projects with internationally diverse team members prepares our students for the necessary skill of participating and managing cross-border project teams. Our students build a network of global contacts with future business leaders around the world, both through their own study abroad and by having those business leaders studying on our campus. Our strong faculty collaborates in global research projects with colleagues at partner schools, and brings that global understanding to the classroom with perspectives drawn from the latest practical and theoretical advances.” Dr. Jones has initiated numerous study abroad programs and strongly supports the school’s faculty-led overseas study programs to Africa, China and Eastern Europe.

Well-traveled faculty bring credible examples from their international experience to the classroom. Faculty experience in teaching at major foreign institutions creates a sensitivity to the learning styles of international students which enhances their classroom experience.

“The strength of the International Business major at the Darla Moore School of Business is built on providing knowledge and skills needed for global leadership.” Jones spearheaded and established the Moore School's Emerging Leaders Program, which recognizes the top 50 business student leaders and provides additional leadership training.

Students learn about global markets, global technology and cultural diversity while gaining country and regional specific knowledge. Outstanding international business faculty teaches students about multinational strategy and operations in the global environment. International Business majors also develop bilingual proficiencies that enable them to work with diverse cultures and teams.

Want your students to be the next students that study in these brand new facilities?

К.А. Тімірязєва.

English Club with Helen Ch.

1. What is a meaning of the notion “Euthanasia”? Is Euthanasia accepted in Ukraine? Do you know the difference between active and passive variants? Do you think that a right to self-determination is more than a law prohibiting euthanasia leading to unacceptable consequences? Is active voluntary euthanasia legal in your country as in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands? What other countries legalized active or passive voluntary euthanasia? What is your attitude to the practice of intentionally ending a life in order to relieve a pain and suffering? Is animal euthanasia an inhuman act? (when gas anesthetics or an intravenous injection used).

2. Have you ever heard about a hospice care? Are these practices of the Medicare system and other health insurance providers available for patients with specific palliative care needs in Ukraine? Is a hospice care possible at the patient's home in your country? Is the term hospice is more likely to refer to a particular type of institution in Ukraine, rather than specifically to care in the final months or weeks of life? Should you pay for these services? What is your attitude to this philosophy of end-of-life care?

3. What is your opinion on the drugs' legalization? Is drug liberalization acceptable in Ukraine? Have you ever heard about programs for drug abused people? What is your opinion on the drug tourism and drug policies in the Netherlands, Norvay, Portugal, Latin America, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, etc.? Is Drug prohibition law efficient in Ukraine?

4. Are pride festivals acceptable or banned by government authorities in Ukraine? What do you think about conducting gay pride parades for the LGBT community in Ukraine and abroad? What is your opinion on legalization of marriage between gays and adoption of children by them? Are pride events assumed to be a promotion of the human right to freedom?

5. Is cancellation of death warrant in Ukraine unreasonable? What is your attitude to the death sentence? Have you ever heard about a capital punishment /the death penalty/ in the US as a punishment for a crime? Do you think that executions should take place in some situations? Do you know any examples of movements against the death penalty?

This Day in the History of the World

Carl Richard Woese
was an American microbiologist and biophysicist. Woese is famous for defining the Archaea (a new domain or kingdom of life) in 1977 by phylogenetic taxonomy of 16S ribosomal RNA, a technique pioneered by Woese which revolutionized the discipline of microbiology.
Notable awards:
Leeuwenhoek Medal (1992)
Selman A. Waksman Award (1995)
National Medal of Science (2000)
Crafoord Prize (2003)

IT IS INTERESTING TO KNOW

Carls R. Woese had some notable awards. One of them is SELMAN A. WAKSMAN Award.

Selman Waksman was born on July 22, 1888, to Jewish parents, in Nova Pryluka, Podolia Governorate, in the Russian Empire, now VINNYTSIA OBLAST, Ukraine.

He was the son of Fradia (London) and Jacob Waksman. He immigrated to the United States in 1910, shortly after receiving his matriculation diploma from the Fifth Gymnasium in Odessa, and became a naturalised American citizen six years later.

Selman W. was a Ukrainian-born American inventor, biochemist and microbiologist whose research into organic substances—largely into organisms that live in soil—and their decomposition promoted the discovery of Streptomycin, and several other antibiotics. A professor of biochemistry and microbiology at Rutgers University for four decades, he discovered over twenty antibiotics (a word which he coined) and introduced procedures that have led to the development of many others. The proceeds earned from the licensing of his patents funded a foundation for microbiological research, which established the Waksman Institute of Microbiology located on Rutgers University's Busch Campus in Piscataway, New Jersey (USA).

Урок-дискусія "E-commerce, successful business ideas, advertisement, Small Business Opportunities 2013"

Урок-дискусія "E-commerce, successful business ideas, advertisement, Small Business Opportunities 2013" за підтримки Harvard Business Club

Warming-up discussion
1) E-commerce.
Have you ever been shopping on-line? What are the necessary prerequisites of safe on-shopping? What goods do you usually buy on-line? Do you prefer to pay by cash or credit card? There are a lot of on-line currencies: webmoney, privatmoney, bitcoins etc, have you got some electronic money on your account? How many times did someone relieve you of your money on the Internet? Û Share your most embarrassing experience of fraud with your partner in pairs. Which of you has suffered more from on-line fraudsters? Report back to the whole class.
2) Successful business ideas: “What’s behind?” How are innovative ideas being matured and realized? Is anyone capable of creating something unique or mere replicas? They say: “History repeats itself”; can this saying be applied to all so-called new ideas? Who are better idea generators, men or women? What skills, talents contribute to successful business ideas? Do you need to obtain a formal education, a university degree in order to become an idea generator?
3) Advertisement. Commercials, hoardings, advertorials, banner ads, outdoor advertising, pop-ups, flyers, posters, word-of-mouth publicity, notices, contextual advertising … we live in an advertizing world. Prioritize the means of advertisement starting with the ones you can tolerate easily and finishing with the ones you absolutely loathe. Have you ever advertised or promoted a product or service yourself? What was that? What is the current trend of advertising business in Vinnytsia? Which services and products are mostly being advertised here?

I Have a Dream for Ukraine English Speech and Essay Contest

This August 28th marks the 50th anniversary of the famous “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr. In his speech Dr. King spoke of his vision of an America where people would be “judged on the content of their character and not the color of their skin.”

Dr. King talked about freedom and equal rights for ALL Americans. His speech was a turning point in American history as we struggled to grow into a country that provided equal opportunity for every citizen. The journey begun by Dr. King and his many followers has not been an easy one.

But every journey starts with a single step and the best ones include a dream of where the journey will lead. In the spirit of the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s speech, the Regional English Language Office at the U.S. Embassy Kyiv would like to invite students in Ukraine to share their dream for their country with us. Please write an essay (in English) on “I Have a Dream for Ukraine.” We will read your essays and invite five entrants to read their speeches at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv on August 28, 2013.

Selection of speeches will be based on the originality and creativity of your Ukrainian Dream. Dreams and words have the power to change the world. We want to hear yours!

The contest is open for all Ukrainian students between the ages of 14-22.

Submit your essay by August 15, 2013 (1000 words or less) and any questions or comments to:
KyivRELO@state.gov

English Club on Life Coaching with Dima S.

You don’t require any specific education or certification for this particular Club’s meeting. But if you are in a quest to succeed with your personal or professional goals, this discussion will capture you.

Topic: Life Coaching
Fact of the Day: “Everybody’s life is either a warning or an example. You’ve got to decide what you’re gonna be and you have to draw a line in the sand.” —Tony Robbins

Definition: The term 'coaching' itself comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for 'carriage', which is a means of transporting something from one place to another. A life coach therefore, is an individual who guides another individual from where they are in life, to where they want to be in life. Coaches do not give advice – instead they use various techniques to facilitate the process of an individual finding the best path for themselves.

On August 14, 2012, the term Life Coach appeared for the first time in Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4uG2kSdd-4 - Nick Vujicic.
http://vk.com/video121113183_165338326 - Nick Vujicic.
