A Discussion on Democracy with Nadia H.

Quote of the day: “The great thing about democracy is that it gives every voter a chance to do something stupid”. Art Spander

Warm-up: what would you do if you could run any country (or yours) for the whole term of office? Would you rather be a President, a Tsar, a King?

1. What is democracy? Do you live in a democratic country? What do the major features of modern democracy include? What are the characteristic features of democratic society? What is your vision of better society?

2. Why is freedom of speech important in a democratic society? What influence does the restriction of freedom of speech have on people? Some people believe that censorship is a good thing. Others think that it can limit freedom of opinion and speech. Which point of view do you agree with?

3. “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine” (T. Jefferson). What are good and bad things about elections?

4. What qualities are important for a democratic leader?

5. Democracy begins at home. How can be democratic principles embodied in family life, friendship, the system of education? What is democratic behavior? Did you have any experience when after behaving democratically you felt sorry?
