Day 1. # National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month

About Sherman Alexie
Sherman Alexie is an American Indian who grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in the state of Washington. As a teenager, he left the resrvation to attend high school to get a better education. Although he was lonely there as one of only two Indians, he still became an excellent student and a star basketball player. In college, Alexie studied to be a doctor. After he kept fainting in his anatomy class, he realized he needed to change his career goal. He took a poetry course and decided to become a writer. 
Alexie has written many books of poetry, essays, and fiction and has received many awards for his work. His writing has been made into an award-winning film, Smoke Signals. 
The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian' is Alexie's first book for young adults /American Themes: an Anthology of Young Adult Literature/.
