Catch-22: Dilemmas and the Problem of Choice

Fun Fact: Joseph Heller wrote this famous novel in 1961, which led to a catch phrase implying that certain situations have no real solutions. Can you name this novel? Catch-22 (en.wikipedia.org).
Catch-22: A situation in which a desired outcome or solution is impossible to attain because of a set of inherently illogical rules or conditions; a tricky, contradictory or self-defeating course of action with paradoxical rules or circumstances.
Dilemma: A situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two or more alternatives, especially equally undesirable ones; a difficult sutuation or problem.

Topic: Catch-22: Dilemmas and the Problem of Choice
1. What is a dilemma? How common are dilemmas in our everyday lives?
2. Dilemmas often involve 'what would you do' situations. What would you do in the following situations: a) you have to choose between a very well paid but boring job, or a job you would love but that doesn't pay much money. b) A friend has asked you to lie to another friend. c) you see someone you know stealing or committing a crime. d) you are acquanited with someone or involved in a activity that your family highly disapproves of, which causes problems in your home life.
3. Have you recently experienced a dilemma in your personal life? What did you do to solve this problem?
4. Have you ever had a catch-22, i.e. a situation in which alll options appear to be negative and there seems to be no real solution? How could you try to solve a catch-22?
5. How do you make difficult choices? Can you ever have too many choices or too many options to choose from? Have you ever had a problem because you have many choices and cannot make up your mind?
6. Can incentives help motivate you to make choices or key decisions? Have you recently made any major decisions in your life?
