Today's Topic: What is this United States Peace Corps volunteer and historic preservation architect doing here in Vinnytsia?
An open international architectural design competition is being conducted for reconstruction of the territory of the Central Park of Culture and Rest named after Maxim Gorky. The aim of the competition is to develop a modern and recreational entertainment facility taking into account historical and cultural heritage.
1. Can a park be entertaining and joyful while commemorating historic events which may not have been joyful?
2. How much emphasis should be placed on cultural heritage while looking to the future?
3. What do you think about introducing a "water activity feature" to Gorky Park?
4. Can the arch entrance and obelisk be modified? Should it be changed to reflect its original juxtaposition?
5. Does the interjection of new elements under the guise of recretional facilities confuse the concept of a landscaped park or does it enhance it?
6. What do you think about an "open international competition" with regard to designing for local historic and cultural sensitivity? Can (or will) a foreigner ever really understand the history of Vinnytsia?
